My Teacher, My Hero
As we honour the 2025 National Teachers’ Month, it’s important to recognise how the theme “My Teacher, My Hero” provides a meaningful lens through which to view the role of educators in our lives. According to the official observance in the Philippines, this celebration runs from September 5 to October 5, and highlights how teachers shape learners’ knowledge, character, and values. When I reflect on this, I am reminded that a teacher does more than transmit information—they inspire hope, create possibility, and support growth even in uncertain times.
Expressing gratitude and respect to my teachers means recognising not only the lessons they taught in class, but the countless unheralded efforts behind the scenes: staying up late preparing materials, adapting to difficult working conditions, mentoring students beyond the syllabus, and believing in our potential even when we doubted ourselves. In many cases, teachers are the unseen heroes of our journey—like the “street educators” mentioned by one advocacy organisation, who bring learning to children in untraditional settings, showing that teaching is a vocation of service not just a job. To me, saying “thank you” is a start—but truly honouring them means committing to learning, practising integrity, and carrying forward what they believed I could become.
In the days and decades ahead, the teacher-student relationship will remain a critical pillar of social development. As technology and society evolve rapidly, the guidance, ethic, and humanity that teachers model will ground us. In celebrating “My Teacher, My Hero,” we acknowledge that educators are not just part of our past—they are the foundation of our future. So, in practical terms, I express my gratitude by reflecting on the lessons I carry, mentoring others when I can, advocating for teacher welfare, and telling my teachers directly: your hard work made a difference. Because every hero doesn’t wear a cape—in some cases they stood in front of a classroom and believed in us when we hadn’t yet believed in ourselves.
